The internet has become a wonderful asset that has opened numerous doors of communication and knowledge for all of its users. It has allowed knowledge to be attain a person's fingertips. While it has increased engagement and overall mastery of standards, the internet can be dangerous for young users if they are not aware of proper internet safety especially in the educational setting. Technology in education has become more and more vital in an effective classroom. There are several simple ways to keep our students safe while using email and the internet.

CommunicationStudents need to be taught ways to be safe while using the internet. Ways to do this would be for educators to discuss proper internet safety through classroom activities and videos before allowing students to be on the internet. In the videos below, it explains ways for students to remain safe while on the internet in a student-friendly way.

Support good choicesStudents love to surf the web and learn new things through technology. In order for students to stay safe online, they should be only allowed on certain sites until they learn more about the pros and cons of the cyber world. Staying safe.org advices "students to only expand their online experience and their autonomy when developmentally appropriate, as they demonstrate competence in safe and secure online behavior and good decision making." By doing this, they can avoid many of the unsafe areas of the internet and email.

Avoid opening spam emailsWhen emailing, students should be sure only to open emails from accounts they are familiar with. Links can be embedded in the emails. Those links should never be opened. For younger emailers, there is a site called kids email. It provides students with an account that removes ads, and keeps adults informed on the their account. This type of account will give students emailing opprotunities without the worry of being unsafe.
